ASTM A36/A572/A992 Standards

American Standard: ASTM A36|ASTM A572|ASTM A992
AGICO supplies American Standard H-beams, primarily manufactured in accordance with 3 ASTM standards:
- ASTM A36: It is a mild and hot-rolled carbon structural steel developed by ASTM International covering hot-rolled structural steel sections.
- ASTM A572: This standard covers 5 grades of (HSLA) structural steel sections, plates, piles, and bars used in the United States.
- ASTM A992: It is used mainly for producing structural steel components with high corrosion resistance. It covers hot-rolled steel structures for use in building framing or bridges, or for general structural purposes.
These 3 standards clearly define requirements for dimensional accuracy, permissible tolerances, and surface quality for hot-rolled steel sections, including H-section steel. ASTM A36 and ASTM A572 are the most commonly used steel standards for general use. AGICO also sells H-beam products produced according to other national standards.

H-Beam Material Types – ASTM A36/A572/A992
AGICO supplies ASTM standard H beams made of steel materials such as ASTM A36, ASTM A572, and ASTM A992, covering the yield strength range (250-450 MPa), tensile strength range (400-710 MPa), and elongation percentage range (17-20). Here is a comparison table for the 3 standards:
ASTM H-Beam Design

When selecting H-beams for American Standard (ASTM) steel structure projects, ASTM A36, A572, and A992 are the 3 most common material specifications. They represent different designs, ranging from general-purpose carbon steel to high-performance seismic-resistant steel. ASTM A36 is a basic, economical choice; A572 Gr.50 represents high strength; and A992 is the preferred choice for modern buildings, combining strength and excellent seismic performance.
American Standard H-beams are often referred to as W-series (wide flange). Their naming convention is W21×55, where “21” represents a nominal height of 21 inches (approximately 533 mm), and “55” represents a weight per unit length of 55 pounds per foot (approximately 82.6 kg/m). During design, specific cross-sectional dimensions, moment of inertia, and other geometric parameters should be consulted according to ASTM A6/A6M standards.
ASTM H-Beam Application

- ASTM A36 H Beam: Suitable for platform walkways, secondary supports, and beams and columns in general industrial and civil buildings with non-seismic designs.
- ASTM A572 Gr.50 H Beam: Suitable for load-bearing columns and main beams in large-span, heavy-load industrial plants, bridges, and high-rise buildings.
- ASTM A992 H Beam: Especially recommended for tall buildings that need to withstand earthquakes, important public buildings, and any steel frame system that requires strong safety and durability. A992’s excellent toughness makes it an ideal material for resisting dynamic loads such as earthquakes and wind-induced vibrations.
