What is H Beam ?

H Beam is a widely used modern and economical structural steel product named after its “H-shaped” cross-section. It is produced from carbon structural steel or low-alloy high-strength steel billets, H Beams are hot-rolled on universal mills in a single pass to form parallel flanges with uniform internal structure. Compared with fabricated or welded H Beams that require secondary processing, hot-rolled H Beams provide more consistent metallurgical properties, superior mechanical performance, and higher production efficiency.

Types of H Beams

H beams are now the mainstream structural steel product used in building and industrial construction. Common product types include wide-flange, medium-flange, narrow-flange H Beams (HW / HM / HN), large heavy H Beams, and split T-Beams produced by longitudinally cutting an H Beam. It can also be classified into other types according to the national standards of other countries.

H Beams have an efficient and economical H-section shape, which featured with excellent strength-to-weight ratio and low residual stress. Compared with conventional I-beams, H Beams offer higher load-bearing capacity, lighter weight, improved section stability, and easier construction. Using H Beams can reduce structural weight by 30–40%.

H Beam Applications: As both sides of the flanges are parallel and the flange tips are square, H Beams are easy to assemble into built-up steel members, reducing welding and fastening work by up to 25%. Typical applications include industrial buildings, high-rise buildings, bridges, shipbuilding, cranes, material-handling systems, equipment platforms, foundations, bracing frames, and foundation and earth retaining piles.

H-Beam Drawing

The designation of an H beam is named as: Height H × Flange Width B × Web Thickness t1 × Flange Thickness t2. For example, an H beam labeled Q235B / SS400 200×200×8×12 indicates a wide-flange H beam with:

  • Height: 200 mm,
  • flange width: 200 mm
  • web thickness: 8 mm
  • flange thickness: 12 mm
  • steel grade: Q235B or SS400.

Choose H Beams According to Size

AGICO supplies H Beams in the forms of Hot-Rolled H Beams and Welded H Beams according to its production process. H beams can be produced in various national standards: ASTM A6 W-beam, EN 10365 JIS G 3192 and ‌GB/T 11263-2024‌, JG/T 581-2023. Hot-rolled H Beams are provided in China in following 3 Series, which are classified by size:

HW Serie – Wide-Flange H Beam Weight and Size Chart‌

HW Types H beam depth is approximately equal to the flange width. HW Beams are mainly used as steel cores in reinforced concrete columns (also known as encased steel composite columns) and are widely used as structural columns.

HM Serie – Medium-Flange H Beam Weight and Size Chart‌

HM Beams have a depth-to-flange-width ratio of approximately 1.33–1.75. They are used as frame columns or as beams subjected to dynamic loads, such as equipment platforms and machinery structures.

HN Serie – Narrow-Flange H Beam Weight and Size Chart‌

HN Beams have a depth-to-flange-width ratio of ≥ 2, making them suitable primarily for beam applications. Their use is similar to traditional I-beams. Common steel grades used for H Beams include Q235B, Q345B, SS400, SM490, Q345, and equivalent international grades.

H Beam Products According to Application

H beam products have been supplied by AGICO as steel members in various projects and applications, such as H beams and H columns in steel structures for buildings and bridges, H Piles for combi-wall systems and bearing piles.

H Section Beam

Structural Steel Member
  • Definition: H section beam can be used as a beam member in building structure to resist lateral bending loads. It features moderately wide flanges and a relatively deep web, offering excellent flexural rigidity and load-carrying efficiency in the horizontal direction.
  • Application: H beams serve as primary steel structure members in floor systems, industrial platforms, roof steel trusses, bridge girders, and other horizontal load-bearing structures. They are designed to efficiently span long distances and transfer superimposed loads to supporting columns or walls.

H Section Column

Structural Steel Member
  • Definition: H beam in certain sizes can be used as columns of a building or equipment, they are typically designed in wider and thicker flanges, providing superior compressive strength and buckling resistance under axial loads.
  • Application: H beams are widely applied in high-rise building frames, industrial building columns, and bridge piers. It’s one of the most popular column solutions for vertical bearing with high structural efficiency.

H-beam Catenary Pole

H Section OSC Pole
  • Definition: The catenary poles are usually supplied in 3 forms: square and tubular steel pipe poles, lattice poles, and H-beam poles.
  • Application: Various H-beam catenary poles are widely applied in electrified railway soft cross-span systems, bridge-mounted catenary steel poles, and brackets.

HP Pile / H Pile

Pile Element
  • Definition: HP Piles, or H piles are H-shaped steel members specially designed for deep foundation applications as combined wall systems and bearing piles. Compared with standard H beams, HP piles are produced with equal flange and web thicknesses and a more square-shaped profile, this structure enables it with high strength. This design of heavy duty h beam section provides exceptional axial load capacity, impact resistance, and torsional strength, enabling the H pile to withstand dynamic driving forces during pile installation.
  • Application: HP piles are primarily used in deep foundations for port structures, high-rise buildings, earth retaining, and other applications where loads must be transferred deep into the ground.

Hot-rolld & Welded H Beam Price Comparison

Compared with welded H-beams, Hot-rolled H-beams has reduced the processing steps of pre-welding treatment, welding, straightening, etc.—resulting in a lower cost per ton.

For welded H-beams, although they generally have higher costs, their prices are highly correlated with medium and heavy plate prices (the correlation coefficient reached 0.978 from 2020 to 2024). By 2024, the price gap had narrowed to about USD 18 per ton, which is affected by the price drop of medium and heavy plates (-9.29%), which was larger than that of H-beams (-6.58%).

How to choose between the 2 types?  Customer shall consider the size and environment requirements first, with the size options of hot rolled h beams have been increased, using hot rolled h beams is a cost-effective choice, but welded H-beams can not be fully replaced, for it has advantages in customized materials, dimensions and lengths. (See Table 1 for the types, advantages, and disadvantages of construction-grade H-beams.)
