H Pile Requirement According to GB/T 32285-2024

The GB/T 32285-2024 standard is a newest standard for H Pile products, it has set detailed specific requirements for H-section steel piles:

  • Tensile strength: ≥ 400 Mpa
  • Yield Strength: ≥ 235 MPa.
  • Low-Temperature Impact Test: Test temperature is set at –40°C,
  • Absorbed Energy: ≥ 27 J.
  • Dimensional Tolerances: Flange width deviation: ±2.5 mm,
  • Permissible Straightness Deviation: < 0.15% of the total length.

What is an H-Pile

H piles are also known as H beams, which have an H cross-section and are used as pile members. Featuring excellent mechanical properties, stable structural performance, and high adaptability, they are able to bear heavy loads and provide structural support. Now H Piles are an essential component in foundations, substructure works, and as a king pile in earth-retaining systems.

H Pile Applications: H piles are driven into the earth and rock layers by driving equipment, load from upper structures are transferred to the ground evenly. They are extensively applied in building foundation support, bridge substructures, port and waterfront works, and deep excavation retaining walls. It can be connected to U type sheet piles or larssen sheet piles to form a combi-wall system, or used singlely for temporary projects.

  • In high-rise building foundations, H-piles are used as bearing piles to ensure overall structural stability.
  • In bridge foundations, H-piles are commonly used as primary load-bearing piles in bridge foundations.
  • For deep excavation projects, H-piles help control ground deformation and maintain excavation safety throughout construction.

HP Pile and H Pile

HP pile and H pile are basically the same steel product type, the only difference is their standards.

HP piles are a type of bearing piles produced according to American steel standards (ASTM A6 / ASTM A992 / ASTM A572), it is an H beam pile serie for deep foundation load-bearing. H piles are commonly referred to as hot-rolled H-section steels produced according to EN, JIS and GB standards, it’s application is the same: earth retaining, temporary/permanent shoring, and pile foundations.

Available H Pile Sizes

GB Standard: China H piles standard GB/T 32285-2024 specifies the dimensions, profiles, weights, and permissible tolerances for hot-rolled H-sections. Common types include HW (wide-flange H-sections), HM (medium-flange H-sections), and HN (narrow-flange H-sections). Taking HW200×200 as an example, both its height and flange width are 200 mm, with an 8 mm web thickness and a 12 mm flange thickness. Its theoretical weight is approximately 50.5 kg/m. These different types are used in various engineering applications: HW sections are ideal for carrying large axial loads and biaxial bending; HM sections are commonly used in structural frames; and HN sections are typically used for beams or members subjected primarily to uniaxial bending.

JIS & EN StandardJapanese H-shape sheet pile standards are widely used internationally. Common sizes include H200, H250, and H300. European H-shape sheet piles also have distinctive dimensions and performance characteristics. For example, in the HEA series, the HEA100 section has a height of 100 mm, a flange width of 106 mm, a web thickness of 5 mm, and an 8 mm flange thickness, with a unit weight of about 19 kg/m. The HEB series features larger sizes。

Common Sizes – H Pile Weight and Size Chart‌

AGICO supplies hot-rolled H piles according to various standards. here are the most common sizes for reference:

H Piles VS Tubular Piles and Concrete Piles

H Piles are one of the most frequently used pile type, it is widely used as the king piles of combi-wall system and bearing piles for high-strength, low cost in production and installation, compared with tubular piles and concrete piles, it has the following advantages:

H Beam Pile Driven
  • Superior load-bearing performance: The H section consists of a web (vertical plate) and flanges (horizontal plates), which forms a stable load-resisting structure that provide 10–15% more higher load capacity than conventional I-shape piles at the same weight, and offer better balanced bending performance than tubular piles in bridge foundation construction.
  • Higher construction efficiency: The H section is an optimized soil contact profile, H pile driving has low driving resistance and can rapidly penetrate into the ground. H-piles can also be easily spliced for large length, the installation efficiency is typically 30% faster than that of precast concrete piles.
  • Better cost-effectiveness: H Pile has lighter self-weight (more than 60% lighter than concrete piles for equivalent load capacity), transportation and installation costs are less.
  • Low Production Cost: Hot rolling process of H piles is a single forming process, H Piles are produced with high manufacturing efficiency and a lower production cost compared with cold-formed H-piles.

How to Make an H Pile Order from AGICO

When purchasing hot-rolled H-section steel piles, please provide the ordering information and fabrication requirements in details.

H-Pile Steel Equivalent Steel Grade

H Pile Sizes:
You should send AGIO with detailed dimensional infomation, including the H pile’s height, flange width, web thickness, and flange thickness, send a drawing if you have it. In addition, the required steel grade must be noted.

Steel Grade:
For H Piles of China standard, the grade of an H-section steel pile is composed of a letter indicating yield strength (for example, Q represents “yield strength”), a numerical value of the yield strength, and a quality grade symbol (such as A, B, C, or D, where different grades indicate different levels of impact toughness and other mechanical properties).

For example, Q355B is the steel grade with a yield strength of 355 MPa for H beam, customer should select proper steel grades based on design requirements and service conditions. If you require H piles withhigher toughness or greater impact loads, choose higher steel grades.
