What is an Interlocking Pipe Pile?

    Interlocking Pipe Pile Sample
    Interlocking Pipe Pile Sample

Interlocking pipe piles are a type of tubular pile produced for pile foundation projects of deep foundations and harbors. They are always used together with steel sheet piles as the combi wall system, while interlocking pipe piles offer load-bearing capacity as the foundation piles, and steel sheet piles function as the retaining wall. The interlocking pipe pile wall withstands pressure from soil, water, and sand on one side, allowing the project on the other side to proceed smoothly.

The production of interlock pipe piles includes 2 steel parts: interlock connectors/corner piles and steel pipe. AGICO supplies interlock pipe piles, mainly produced with welded pipes (SSAW & LSAW), in a wide diameter range. Seamless pipes are rarely used due to their higher cost and limited diameter range. The most common interlocks welded onto the base pipes are Larsen interlocks and ball-and-socket interlocks.

    Interlocking Pipe Pile from AGICO
Pipe piles with interlocks supplied from AGICO are available in a variety of Asia, European and American steel standards, They are made from a wide range of steel grades, from carbon steel to high-strength steel, and can be customized in various thicknesses to meet specific design requirements.

AGICO pipe piles have been thoroughly used in many wharf walls and floating structures in Asia, and our pipe piles are used in more fileds of foundation engineering and construction piping, industrial pipelines, communications infrastructure, and machinery.

    Interlock Types for Pipe Pile

The welded interlock types for pipe pile are designed the same as steel sheet piles, which include the following types:

    • Larssen Type: This interlock type is compatible with Larssen sheet piles, and widely used in combi-wall piling system.
    • CT Type: A C-shaped lock is vertically connected to one side of the steel pipe, while a T-shaped lock is vertically connected to the other side.
    • Ball and Socket Interlock: This interlock is specially designed high-performance mechanical joints for connecting large steel pipe piles, which can have certain degrees of angle rotate.

    Interlocking Pipe Pile Steel Grades

Considering the size and cost, pipe piles are produced with SSAW pipe, and the diameter can reach up to 3000 mm. Besides the Chinese pipe pile standards of GB/T 700, GB/T 1591, GB/T 12470, AGICO also supplies international standards of ASTM A252, API 5L, and EN10219-1, etc. Since API is the standard for the oil industry, it has strict production requirements with higher performance, which is adopted in the fabrication of pipe piles with interlocks.

    • API standard covers grades: B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65 up to X70 and X80.
    • The steel grades for pipes and piles specified in EN 10219-1 include S235JRH, S275JOH/J2H, S355JOH/JEH, S420MN, and S460MH.

    Interlock Pipe Pile Application

Interlocking pipe piles are large-diameter steel pipe piles fitted with welded sheet pile interlocks, they are used to form continuous retaining wall systems, or act as king piles in combi-wall systems. The welded interlocks allow the pipe piles to connect with conventional sheet piles (U-type, Z-type, or hat-shaped) to create a high-strength, low-permeability retaining structure.

    Concrete-Filled Steel Pipe Piles

Interlocking pipe piles are widely used in deep excavation, marine engineering, and port terminals, where both structural capacity and water cut-off performance are required.

Interlock pipe pile can be used directly or can be filled with (C30–C50) concrete after the piling, which is decided by the role of steel pipe piles. For most projects, if the piling structure is a permanent project and pipe piles are used as the foundation piles that bear heavy loads, then they shall be filled with concrete. If it is only a temporary project or functions only as a retaining member, concrete fill is not necessary. Concrete fill is used for extra bending strength for large retaining heights and reduced deformation under lateral earth and water pressure.

    King Piles in Combi-Wall Systems

Interlocking pipe piles are used singlely or together with U/Z sheet piles:
    • Port quay walls
    • Bulkhead walls
    • Deep-water berths
    • Breakwaters
    • Jetty structures
    • Container terminals

    Structural Foundation Steel Pipe Piles

Structural foundation pipe piles with concrete fill shows better compressive & tensile capacity, overall stiffness (Ec + Es composite action), buckling resistance.
    • Bridge foundation piles
    • Offshore wind turbine foundation piles
    • High-capacity building foundation piles
    • Mooring dolphin piles
