What is a Micropile Foundation?

Micropiles, also known as minipiles and root piles, are a type of small-diameter borehole-drilled grouting pile widely used in ground improvement and foundation reinforcement projects. Typical micropile casing pipe diameters range from 100 mm to 300 mm, with a slenderness ratio greater than 30. making them especially suitable for sites with limited access, low headroom, or sensitive surrounding structures. The micropile casing can be used as the main reinforcing material or as a permanent retaining casing element.

Common Micropile Types and Structure

The major micropile types have a unique design of load transfer mechanism and can be designed to resist different levels of structural loads, such as compression, tension, and lateral forces, singly and simultaneously.

  • Cased Micropiles: Steel casing pipes provide both structural capacity and borehole stability.
  • Bar-Reinforced Micropiles: High-strength threaded bars or rebars act as the primary reinforcement.
  • Composite Micropiles (Pipe + Bar): Steel pipe casing combined with internal bars for enhanced load performance.

Micropile Application

Micropile Foundation System

A micropile system consists primarily of pressure-grouted cement grout (or sand-cement grout / fine concrete) combined with a central reinforcement element. Depending on structural and load requirements, the reinforcement may take the form of deformed steel bars, threaded bars, steel pipes, or structural steel sections. The load-carrying capacity of a micropile is developed mainly through bond resistance between the grouted pile body and the surrounding soil or rock.

FAQ of Micropile Grouting and Application

According to project requirements, micropiles can be installed in vertical or inclined orientations, and may be arranged as single piles, pile rows, or intersecting grid systems. When installed in an intersecting grid row, the pile group resembles a tree root structure, which is why this configuration is commonly called a root pile or reticulated root pile system. Root piles are particularly effective for slope stabilization, underpinning, and excavation support.

Grouting for micropiles typically refers to micropile systems equipped with pre-installed grouting pipes that allow controlled injection of cement grout during or after installation. Various types of grouting pipe systems have been developed and used for permanent sealing and ground improvement, such as construction joints, cold joints, leakage paths, and gaps between foundation elements and surrounding concrete or soil.

The basic function of grouting micropiles is to inject cementitious grout into voids, fractures, and interfaces, to form a solid and compact foundation in the following aspects:

  • Complete filling and sealing of gaps and discontinuities
  • Prevention of water leakage, displacement, and structural deformation
  • Improvement of contact between the pile body and surrounding soil or rock
  • Enhancement of bearing stratum quality at the pile base

After pressure grouting, the load transfer performance of the micropile can be significantly improved to meet its design bearing capacity requirements of a specific project.
However, grouting does not replace the structural role of reinforcement—a grouting micropile is usually used together with high strength steel bars, steel pipes, or composite reinforcement as a piling solution.

Micropiles’ main advantage is the strength formed by the pile casing and grouted cement or concrete, based on the grouting pressure level, micropiles can be divided into gravity grouting (Type-A), low-pressure grouting (Type-B), and secondary grouting to enhance bearing capacity (Type-C/D). With different steel component combinations, micropiles are widely used in following applications:

  • Bridge, Railway & Metro Foundations
It is suitable for high-load applications with strict deformation control.
  • Industrial & Energy Facilities
Foundation reinforcement for plants, substations, and energy infrastructure.
  • Underpinning & Foundation Strengthening
micropile offers load transfer and settlement control for existing buildings and infrastructure.
  • Urban Reconstruction & Limited-Access Sites
Micropile is the best choice for confined sites where large piling rigs cannot operate.
  • Slope Stabilization & Retaining Structures
When used in combination with anchors or beams, micropiles can form stabilizing frameworks.

Compared with large-sized piles, micropiles features with miniaturized construction equipment to adapt to confined spaces, low vibration and noise to meet urban environmental protection requirements, and a high slenderness ratio design to optimize material usage. are widely adopted where conventional piling systems are impractical due to:

  • Limited access or low headroom
  • Existing structures requiring underpinning
  • Urban environments with strict vibration and noise limits
  • Complex geology including soft soils, mixed layers, or hard rock

Their flexibility in orientation (vertical or inclined) and layout (single piles, rows, or reticulated systems) makes micropiles a reliable solution for challenging foundation conditions.
