What is a Sheet Pile Wall ?

Sheet pile wall is a type of retaining wall made of steel sheet piles such as u sheet piles, z sheet piles, flat sheet piles. They can also be formed by concrete or plastic sheet piles.  Sheet pile walls are designed for waterfront structures and temporary excavation support (earth retaining). The interconnected sheet piles are installed by embedding in soil to resist lateral pressure.

Steel Sheet Pile Role in Piling Construction

Steel sheet pile is the basic metal element in sheet pile walls that provides earth retention, water control, and excavation support. Larssen sheet piles are a common type that Installed vertically and interlocked to form a continuous retaining wall, which create a stable barrier capable of resisting lateral soil and water pressures.

Steel sheet pile walls are the most widely adopted sheet piling solution due to their structural efficiency, versatility, and cost-effective lifecycle. It is an economic fundamental structural solution across civil, marine, and underground construction; it is now the preferred choice for both temporary and permanent works due to its strength, speed, and cost efficiency.

What are the key factors in designing sheet pile walls? From AGICO’s experience, the first factor is the lateral earth pressure, water pressure and surcharge load distribution; then calculating the required depth of penetration to resist these pressures; and selecting a steel sheet pile section with sufficient bending strength, shear force and deflection control.

Applications of Steel Sheet Pile Walls

  1. In the construction of basements, underground structures, or deep utility trenches, steel sheet retaining walls offer immediate lateral earth pressure support.
  2. Steel Sheet Piling Walls with tight interlocking joints provide effective resistance against water seepage while withstanding dynamic loads from vessels and water currents.
  3. Steel Sheet Piles are driven into the substrate to form a watertight enclosure, allows in-the-dry construction of bridge piers, pipeline intakes, or foundation repairs.
  4. Steel sheet piles are equally effective as permanent retaining structures and flood protection walls. They serve as long-term retaining walls for highways, terraces, and cut-and-cover tunnels.

Steel Sheet Pile Wall Types

AGICO offers steel sheet pile walls formed by H piles, U sheet piles, Z sheet piles, and flat sheet piles, as well as combi-wall systems. AGICO is able to help you with the following 5 steel sheet pile wall types:

Cantilever Z Sheet Pile Wall
Cantilever Z Sheet Pile Wall

Cantilever Sheet Pile Wall

Cantilever sheet pile walls rely on the bending strength of the piles alone to resist lateral earth pressures. They are typically used for retaining walls up to 6m tall. Anchored sheet pile walls include anchors at the top to resist the overturning moment from earth pressures.

Features:
  • Rely solely on the depth of the pile shaft to resist earth pressure.
  • Simple structure, no internal bracing or anchoring system.
Typical Applications:
  • Shallow foundation pit support
  • Temporary retaining walls

Anchored Sheet Pile Wall

An anchored sheet pile wall is composed of steel sheet piles combined with horizontal or inclined steel tie rods. It is an excavation support structure designed for deep excavation projects. One end of the steel tie rod is connected to the sheet pile wall, while the other end is anchored into the surrounding soil or rock mass. It is suitable for both temporary cofferdams and permanent structures such as quay walls, docks, and dry docks.

Features:
  • Sharing earth pressure through anchor bolts, anchor cables, or tie rods.
  • Significantly reduced pile bending moment.
Typical Applications:
  • Urban underground engineering
  • Port and wharf retaining walls.

H-Beam Braced Sheet Pile Wall
Braced Sheet Pile Wall

Braced Sheet Pile Wall

Braced sheet pile wall has an internal bracing system formed by H-beams, steel pipes, or structural sections and wales, it is one of the earliest and most traditional forms of excavation support, The stability of the excavation is maintained through the combined resistance provided by steel sheet piles and internal support framework, effectively limiting wall deformation and ensuring excavation stability.

Features:
  • Uses steel and concrete supports to form an internal support system
  • High rigidity and good deformation control
Typical Applications:
  • Subway station foundation pits
  • Dense urban underground structures

Combination Pile Walls – Sheet Pile| H Pile| Pipe Pile

Pile Wall Forms:
Features:
  • Main load-bearing part is pipe piles or H-beams
  • Sheet piles serve as retaining walls and waterstops
Typical Applications:
  • Deep-water wharves
  • High-load support structures

King Pile Wall

Features:
  • King piles (H-beams) are the main load-bearing component, such as HZZ Combi-Wall System
  • Sheet piles or precast slabs are used as fillers
Typical Applications:
  • Temporary foundation pit support
  • Municipal engineering

Steel Sheet Pile Wall Cost Analysis

Understanding these factors cost can help engineers, contractors, and project owners make informed decisions during design and budgeting stages. AGICO can offer you the best price to reduce the sheet pile wall cost in the first place!

Material Cost

The material cost of steel sheet pile wall is typically the largest part of total cost, it can be affected by the steel grade and pile size and surface treatment, etc.

  • Steel Grade: Higher-strength steels reduce section weight but increase unit price, choose the right steel sheet pile can significantly reduce the total steel weight and lower the sheet pile wall cost.
  • Sheet Pile Profile: Steel sheet piles in large length and thickness are essential for deeper embedment with lighter weight.

Pile Installation and Driving Equipment Cost

Pile installation cost varies due to site conditions and construction method. In urban or marine pile wall projects, installation cost can equal or even exceed material cost.

  • Driving method and site condition: Vibratory hammer is the most economical driving equipment suitable for easy driving earth conditions, impact hammer is used for hard soil and rock layers, and press-in equipment are needed for silent piling in urban areas. High driving resistance will increase the power and pile consumption.
  • Offshore and Onshore Difference: Sheet pile wall projects in offshore areas cost more than onshore sites, as marine works have limited headroom and require special crane sizes and piling equipment.
