Steel Power Transmission Pole Introduction

Power transmission poles, steel power poles, are tubular utility poles used in electrical power distribution. They are being used more and more often to support overhead power lines, replacing older wooden and concrete poles in power transmission line projects. Besides the basic supporting function, they also provide a good-looking appearance in urban cities.
What is heavy-duty power transmission pole?
Heavy-duty power transmission pole is a reinforced pole type designed for long-span transmission lines of high voltage (110kV/220kV/500kV/765kV), it offers higher strength and stiffness for applications in extreme loading conditions. Compared with standard steel poles, heavy-duty steel poles feature a larger diameter, thicker wall thickness, and multi-section splicing (segmented sections).
Why use steel tubular pole for power transmission?
Compared to reinforced concrete poles and wooden poles, steel poles offer advantages such as high strength, light weight, faster installation, and long service life, making them the most popular choice for modern power grid construction.
Steel Power Transmission Pole Types

According to the structural form, transmission steel poles are classified into mono-pole and sectional-pole. AGICO can supply steel poles for power transmission in circular and polygonal sections.
- Monopoles have a simple structure and are suitable for lines with voltage levels of 35 kV and below, with a common height of 12 meters.
- Sectional poles, formed by connecting 2 or more tubular sections with a welded flange and a high-strength hex head bolt (grade 8.8 bolt), can reach heights of over 30 meters. These steel utility poles are primarily used for 110 kV and higher transmission lines.
Feature: Circular-section poles provide low wind resistance but have relatively weaker bending performance; polygonal sections (e.g., dodecagonal, hexadecagonal) offer both good wind resistance and structural strength.
Key Parameters of Steel Power Transmission Pole
There are 3 key dimensional parameters in steel power transmission pole production: height, wall thickness, tip and base diameter, they together with the proper steel grade provide the required strength for the power pole structure. Here are the details:
- Height Options: The steel pole height options: 12 m, 15 m, 18 m, 21 m, 24 m, 27 m, 30 m, etc. Customers shall select the suitable height based on the safe clearance distance between conductors and the ground, terrain conditions.
- Wall Thickness: The wall thickness of steel poles ranges from 4 to 12 mm, and for heavy-duty steel poles, it’s above 16mm.
- Tip and Base Diameter: The tip diameter range is usually 150 mm – 300 mm, while the base diameter ranges from 400 mm – 600 mm.

Fabrication Process of Steel Power Transmission Pole
Steel power poles are support structures made from high-quality steel plates through processes of cutting, bending and rolling, welding and hot-dip galvanizing. We have CNC systems for flattening, cutting, folding, and auto-welding, along with technical expertise in power distribution, advanced production equipment, and experienced staff. The Steel poles for power transmission are fabricated strictly according to national standards, and all of the steel poles are required to pass a quality test before delivery.

5 Steps of Steel Power Pole Fabrication
- Steel Plate Cutting: AGICO adopts a laser cutting machine for the steel plate cutting process. The cutting accuracy is controlled to less than 0.05mm, and a narrow kerf range of 0.1 mm – 0.2 mm.
- Plate Rolling and Forming: pre-cut steel plates are rolled into a tubular shape by a plate rolling machine, with the proper adjustment of pressure for the designed radius. For a polygonal pole, steel plates are bent several times to form the polygonal section.
- Welding: the rolled and bent tubular member requires a strict welding process for girth and longitudinal weld. The weld seams are required to pass non-destructive testing, such as ultrasonic or X-ray flaw detection. Our factory owns automatic gas shielded welding and submerged arc welding equipment, the welding process is completed with high efficiency, fast speed and smooth welding surface.
- Pole Section Assembly: The pre-welded pole sections (such as the pole tip, pole body, and pole base), including connecting flanges, cross-arms, climbing ladders, and grounding plates, are assembled and welded according to the customer.
- Straightening: flame straightening or mechanical straightening methods are used to control the geometric tolerances, so that the steel pole can meet the standard requirements.
Surface Treatment – Hot-dip Galvanizing
AGICO applies galvanizing as surface treatment for steel power transmission poles, it is completed in 3 steps as follows:

- Rust Removal: The steel tubular pole is immersed in an acid pool to remove surface rust and scale, revealing the metallic luster.
- Hot-Dip Galvanizing: The pickled steel tubular pole is dipped into a molten zinc bath at a temperature of 450–480 °C. The galvanized layer is formed with a thickness of above ≥85μm, which ensures the anti-corrosion performance for 20–30 years.
- Passivation Treatment: A strong protective layer is created to improve the steel pole’s resistance to rust.
Package: Finished steel poles are covered by mat or straw bale at the top and bottom, and we put wood blocks between the poles to avoid damage during transportation, or we can package it following the client’s requirement.
