What Is Steel Structure Wind Turbine Tower

The steel structure wind turbine tower is a wtg tower made of steel used to support the wtg system. It is a crucial connection component between the wind turbine and its’ foundation. Main functions of wind turbine tower: it is used to mount the rotor, gearbox, generator, and other equipment, and to elevate them to a height sufficient for capturing high-altitude wind energy.
Wind Turbine Tower Features: The wind turbine tower shall provide adequate fatigue resistance to withstand vibration loads induced by the rotor, including the cyclical impacts from startup and shutdown, gust variations, tower shadow effects, etc. Wind turbine tower and wind turbine foundations works together to ensure the wind mill safety.
Weight and Cost: The wind turbine tower’s weight constitutes about half of the wind turbine’s total weight, and its cost accounts for approximately 10% of onshore windmill construction costs and around 5% of offshore windmill construction costs.
Wind Turbine Steel Tower Supply from AGICO
AGICO supplies steel towers for wind turbine are mainly in 2 common types: tubular wind turbine towers and lattice wind turbine towers. Our factories’ manufacturing capability focuses on heavy steel processing, precision welding, and structural reliability, supporting wind power projects with stable, long-life tower solutions. Besides the steel tower, we also supply high strength fasteners for tower connctions: wind tower bolt, blade bolt and anchor bolt for wind turbine anchor cage system.

Quality Control: The manufacturing process of wind turbine towers are completed strictly according to customer drawings, technical specifications, and applicable international standards, ensuring consistent quality and dimensional accuracy from raw material to finished delivery. AGICO is an experienced steel fabrication service provider; we offer full-process fabrication services for both types, the following processes are all strictly monitored by the quality control system:
- Structural steel plate and section material processing
- Tower shell forming and truss member fabrication
- High-strength welding and structural assembly
- Surface treatment and corrosion protection
- Quality inspection, documentation, and traceability
Wind Turbine Tower Types Manufacture for Sale
The three most common wind turbine tower types for sale are flexible tubular towers (all-steel towers), lattice towers, and hybrid towers. AGICO can offer customized manufacturing service of tubular tower and lattice tower for your windmill projects.

Lattice Wind Turbine Tower
Lattice wind turbine towers are truss-type steel structures assembled from high-strength tubular members through cutting and welding. It has a modular support structure consists of a tower base and the main lattice body. This structure enables rapid on-site installation through standardized connectors and flanges, and utilizes concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) composite materials to enhance tower strength.
Application: Compared with tubular towers, lattice wind turbine towers offer technical advantages such as reduced transportation costs and a smaller foundation footprint, making it particularly suitable for constrained sites like mountainous areas. They have flexible designs for inland wind farms, mountainous or remote project sites, high hub-height wind turbine installations.
Manufacturing process includes: Angle steel or tubular member cutting and drilling, Node plate fabrication and fit-up, Structural welding and bolted connection preparation, Sectional assembly for transport optimization
Tubular Steel Tower for Wind Turbine
The tubular towers for wind turbine are manufactured using heavy steel plates with large thickness, so as to provide sufficient strength for the wind turbine tower. Proper steel grades and thicknesses are chosen for a wide range of turbine capacities and hub heights.
It is manufactured by assembling 3-5 cylindrical or conical segments, and connected through high-strength wind tower bolts and large diameter flanges. Each segment varies in diameter and height. The overall tower height typically ranges from 80 to 120 meters, allowing for better wind energy capture at higher altitudes. The interior is usually equipped with components such as access ladders, power cables, cable ladders, and service platforms
Application: Tubular wind turbine towers are usually manufactured into conical and cylindrical tubular shapes, and widely used for utility-scale onshore wind farms, offshore wind turbine towers, repowering and tower height upgrade projects.

Wind Turbine Tower Manufacturing
Steel Wind Turbine Tower Classification:
- Onshore wind turbine towers are manufactured in accordance with general wind power standards. The raw materials are common structural steel and medium-thickness steel plates, with standard fatigue-class welding requirements and industrial anti-corrosion coating systems suitable for land-based environments.
- Offshore wind turbine towers are produced to offshore engineering and classification society standards. Its’ raw material requires low-temperature, high-toughness offshore-grade steel and heavy, thick steel plates, along with higher fatigue-class welding requirements. To ensure long-term durability in marine environments, offshore towers are equipped with heavy-duty corrosion protection systems, including Thermal Spray Aluminum (TSA) and cathodic protection.
- Lattice wind turbine towers feature a spatial truss steel structure fabricated from angle steel, H-sections, or steel tubes. Due to their structural configuration, the manufacturing process of lattice wind turbine towers differs significantly from that of tubular wind turbine towers.

Key Steps in Wind Turbine Tower Manufacturing Process:
Onshore and offshore tubular wind turbine towers have similar structural forms, while their manufacturing processes vary from steel grade, welding requirement to coating methods due to service environments and design loads. Here are the 3 main manufacturing steps:

Heavy Steel Plate Processing & Forming
- Structural steel grades: S355 / S420 / S460 and equivalent
- Thick plate processing capability for large wind towers
- CNC cutting and precision edge preparation
- Controlled rolling for conical and cylindrical sections

Welding & Structural Assembly
- Automated and semi-automated welding lines
- Multi-pass welding for thick steel sections
- Qualified WPS / WPQR and certified welders
- Distortion control and dimensional accuracy management

Surface Treatment & Corrosion Protection
- Shot blasting to Sa 2.5 / Sa 3.0
- Industrial coating systems (epoxy, polyurethane)
- Offshore options:
- Thermal Spray Aluminum (TSA)
- Heavy-duty multi-layer coating systems
